Neurotoxins (Botox, Xeomin, Dysport)

One of the most popular cosmetic procedures, neuromodulators or neurotoxins, such as Botox®, address dynamic wrinkles, the wrinkles and creases that are caused from repeated facial expressions or movements. These products contain the active toxin, botulinum type A.

Botulinum toxins are injected to relax overactive, wrinkle-causing muscles. As a result, facial expressions will soften and wrinkles are smoothed or diminished. Botulinum toxins are most commonly used to treat forehead creases, crow’s feet, and frown lines, although have other uses.

ARE NEUROTOXINS FOR ME?

Botulinum toxins have historically been used as an anti-aging procedure for older clients. Today, they are a popular addition to the skincare regimens of patients even in their 20s. When and where to begin is a discussion to have with your aesthetic provider.

Botulinum toxins injections are not for everyone. They are not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding or for individuals with certain health or skin conditions. If you are considering injectable toxins, it is important to consult with a skincare professional with a proven background in cosmetic medicine, substantial training, and experience administering botulinum toxin injections.

HOW DO THEY WORK?

Facial lines are either dynamic or static. Static wrinkles are the fine to medium depth lines that are always visible on the face, even if completely at rest. They are caused mostly due to age and the repeated facial movements such as frowning, as well as habits such as your sleeping position. Dynamic wrinkles, on the other hand, are directly related to how your facial muscles move and manipulate the face, these go away once at rest.

Botulinum toxins are mixed with proteins and are injected into the muscle to relax overactive, wrinkle causing muscles. They work by blocking nerve signals to the muscles responsible for contractions. Once the signal is blocked, the muscle cannot respond, which will soften and relax the wrinkle associated with that movement. In other words, the toxin “freezes” facial muscles, erasing wrinkles completely or preventing them from deepening.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT

Botulinum toxins are injected directly into targeted muscle areas using a fine-gauge insulin type needle. While the procedure is considered minimally invasive, it is not entirely pain free. There is typically a short burning sensation. After the injections, small dots of blood are visible at the entry sites, but usually disappear within a few hours. It is not uncommon to experience some bruising, redness and/or swelling at the injection sites as well.

It is important to follow the post procedure recommendations set by your provider. Results are generally seen within 7 days and last 3-5 months.  How long the neurotoxin lasts depend on the amount used and how quickly your body metabolizes the toxin. Many users report an “active” period of 3-4 months.

WHAT TYPE OF TOXIN DO YOU USE?

We currently offer Botox, Xeomin & Dysport with the ability to special order other brands based on client preferences.

HOW MANY UNITS WILL I NEED?

See the following chart for recommended units for women. Men will likely need more than women due to their muscle strength (Dysport units are calculated differently but typically multiplied by 3).
